Coaching is not a new thing - many of us will have had the experience of a parent or teacher setting aside time to focus on helping us develop to our full potential. Coaching is a form of individual development in which the coach helps to bring out an individual's potential. The coach does this by offering support and encouragement and most importantly, places responsibility for development with the individual being coached.
There are many definitions of Executive Coaching and the one we tend to work with in our approach is as follows:
"Executive Coaching is the art and science of facilitating personal and professional development, learning and performance of an executive by expanding his/her options for behaving authentically."
In short, helping people achieve success and be the best they can be.
De-railed Executives
The business world is full of very talented individuals that for one reason or another find their careers stalling or sometimes going completely off track. Perhaps they have developed an excellent series of technical skills but need help working on their interpersonal communication or emotional intelligence. Often people reach a plateau and begin to wonder if this is really what they wanted to achieve and if they are making the most of their abilities. If so, then Executive Coaching may be appropriate.
Why Training Doesn't Always Work
If people need to change their behaviours, the typical solution is to send them on a training programme. However, it depends on what you were trying to change as to whether this will be effective or not. Skills and behaviours are the easiest things to change and training can work well in this situation. But if someone has issues that relate to their character (a moody boss, not trusting the team, always thinking that people are lazy and need to be pushed hard to get them to perform) these are based on deep rooted values and beliefs that are unlikely to change with a short training intervention. In these situations, Executive Coaching is often more suitable.

As no two executives or organisations are the same, then no two solutions can be the same. At The Core Group, we will work with you to fully understand your needs and produce a series of interventions designed to help you achieve your goal and objectives. If you are serious about developing your leadership abilities, then contact us today for a no obligation discussion.
